No, AI is not taking over
Some alternative but apt definitions of AI
When you think of ‘Artificial intellligence’, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Is it a futuristic cyborg with features beyond human capability? Or a multi-talented generative software which can perform surgeries and create art with a single hand?
Doomsayers predicted that AI would take over the world but I doubt that’s going to happen. The reason? Chat GPT itself responded to this prompt, “While AI can be a powerful tool, it operates within the boundaries set by humans and is ultimately guided by our values, needs, and ethical considerations.”
Plus, AI can be annoying at times. You ask for oranges but get sweet lime. You ask for candy but get marshmallows. Which is why I came up with some alternate definitions of AI which actually might be more appropriate!
- Annoying Imitator
Speak to Alexa, Siri or any other voice assistant and they would be quick at responding to queries you have. But when bereft of an answer, they are nothing but an annoying imitation of human voices. “Sorry, I’m having trouble understanding,” she says. But isn’t that why you were created in the first place?
2. Ad-libbing Intellectual
The responses that AI gives constantly remind me of a pseudo-intellectual at an extempore competition. They have no idea what they’re talking about, but yes, they do manage to somehow make sense.
3. Absurd Ideator
All your whacky, crazy questions find answers in the AI algorithms. Which is great! But at other times, the ideas and suggestions it comes up with are truly bizarre.
4. Awful Interrogator
Ask AI to think up a set of questions and it will deliver. But will those make sense? Will they be somewhat similar to the innocuous questions posed by a 4-year-old? I sense the answer would be yes.
5. Arbitrary Interacter
Whether you need to hear a joke at 5:02am in the morning, or find out the weather at 1:34pm before your flight — AI can respond to it all. You don’t need context or small talk to extract information from AI, which is great.
